Grape Soda

I found myself this evening at the local Price Chopper. Since I was thirsty, I decided to grab a soda from the cold case at the end of the register - Welch's Grape Soda to be specific.

While this is certainly not the only time in 12 years that I've had a welch's purple happy party on my tastebuds, I couldn't help but think back to the days that I was "working" late nights as a campus radio jockey and feeding all the spare change I could find into the 1970's coke machine in the station lobby to get my grape fix.

I had all but given up my dream to be a dj before T and I met - after all getting a psychology degree was much more likely to get me a job (ha ha). Besides, I have a weird voice and, as Forrest so often points out, there is a very limited market for 'classic Christian rock' and an even smaller number of radio stations with pressing need for on air talent. It was fun; I had my own office down at the station with 'marketing director' on the door and a healthy amount of CDs coming from my other 'job' at the bookstore. I even got to say our unofficial tag line on the air as I signed off at midnight:

"KECC .... One God ... One Watt .... One Speaker .... One Listener"

I covered the '92 election from the news desk, recorded a few commercials (beside the ones I did for class), and even got to do an interview with 4Him .... Oh the memories. Then again, one of the best things about doing radio was that it got me to quit writing poetry. More on that next time.

he had a green and purple plaid hat (sort of..more of a cap, kind of like a golfer wears) when I met him, I think it was inspired by the grape soda/asbesteos breathing days! He wore it backwards, of course to be "cool"!:)

Wow, you sound like an interesting person with lots of things that make you a facinating personality! Tell me more, tell me more, grape soda dj!

Your tag line is hilarious. Did you really say ".... One Listener"? -Funny!

I love grape soda -it's true something about grape soda takes you back in time. Especially when it comes in a bottle.

although it got better when the station transitioned from AM to FM during my freshman year .... nearly the only way someone could listen to the station was by walking by and hearing it played over the speaker in the hallway outside our door.

we technically had more than 1 watt and that wasn't our official tag ... but it was more fun to say the made up motto - especially at midnight.

Keep in mind I never sent in a recording of myself saying it to be graded by the communications professor. For those breaks, I would use the cheesy the "Best Christian Music of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" or something similar.

Grape soda is yummy! When Evangel switched from their contract with Coke to Pepsi, I got addicted to Pepsi.

KECC played the same songs over and over again! I heard, "Where would my body be" by Johnny Q. Public a million times!

You can't hear Body Be too many times.

Do they still have KECC? Or has its acronym changed to assume the "university" title? =D (KEUC?)

I loved Golden's comment on my blog once about the chant "EC - EC...You look so good to me"! It sounds funny in my head to hear "EU - EU...blah blah blah bla-U"!
