Over the last few years, I've noticed an increase in the number of sappy romantic Christmas stories. Channels like ABC Family and the Hallmark Channel seems to crank them out at an alarming speed. Like any entertainment fad, these types of shows just snowball long past their popularity and end up "jumping the shark" in all the little predictable cliche's.
#1 - single parent that "lost" a spouse on or near Christmas 5,10, or 15 years ago.
#2 - Socially mal-adjusted 11 year old with an overactive belief or dis-belief in Santa or
#3 - Single Parent from #1 had a bad holiday experience i.e. loss of a parent or puppy
#4 - A dreamed of, but never recived Christmas gift.
#5 - Some Dumb-@$$ jerk that thinks the season is all about commercialization or manipulated relationships. - note: sometimes this is also the parent in #3 or the ex-spouse.
Throw in a little ice skating and Christmas Tree buying .... a big moon and some sleighbells ... and there you go! This year I've managed to watch two sequals to these type of films:
"A Christmas Blessing" where we see Niel Patrick Harris (aka Doogie Howser) as the grown up little boy from the Chritmas shoes song/movie. Don't worry, Rob Lowe made it into this one too - even if his hair was a little grey. This time Doogie's girlfriend got the shoes ... and a little boy dies **sniff**.
"Meet the Santas" is the predictable followup to last years "Single Santa, Seeks Mrs. Claus". Steve Gutenburg reprises his role as Santa Jr. and the gal from Wings rounds out the hilarious story of their first Christmas in charge at the pole.
I wonder when the prequels will start coming out? Will we ever see how Grandpa met Grandma all those years before she got ran over by a reindeer? Might we be priveledged enough to see how Rudolph's parents met? And I'm quite sure there is a classic dessert race story somewhere in the past of that dancing camel in the little drummer boy.

I was surprised by the sequels. Don't get me wrong I'm PVR'ing them! But, who would have thought someone had enough cheese left in that block to create a 2nd movie!
I told dash next year...doogie (aka Nathan in the movie) will be saving Rob Lowe's character's daughter or grand-daughter with the shoes going to his family. I mean, what else could they do with the story? But it can live on, because the shoes can be passed on for years to come and continue to change peoples lives. So next time you see an ugly red pair of shoes in the store, just think...."God bless us everyone" and know that you don't have to wear them apparently for them to change your life!
I like christmas movies, but I haven't seen the ones your talking about. You must like them too, because you know the in's and out's of them like you know Narnia.
I did see the commercials for Christmas Blessing and was wondering what Rob Lowe is doing in another Christmas movie. It must be his new gig.
Yes, dash likes them, but we also are both "plot geeks". We poke fun and guess story lines and plots of all the movies and shows we watch. Everything has the same basic formula. We can even guess lines sometimes! It's quite the entertaining moment!
I know what you are talking about, but I am not much of a fan of those fad movies. :)
We saw Elf this past weekend. It was actually sappier than I anticipated, since I thought Will Farrell's humor would overshadow any stereotypical storyline.
Those are not fad movies - they have had Christmas specials on TV every year that I can remember.
Elf is hilarious, I need to watch it again this season.
I haven't seen Elf either, but the boys think its hilarious....who knows we may have to rent it when I come out to visit!
But my all-time favorite is the little "I'm Mister Fire Guy and everything I touch goes poof!" from the claymation show when we were kids. I like the little fireguy with his wispy red up-do because her reminds me of my wife's grandma. "BONES FESTUS YA'LL!!"
