And One Time - At Band Camp .....

I've been trying to catch up on my blogging and had originally posted bits of this as a comment to Golden's review of Phantom of the Opera. Since she has at least 2 other posts up, it would have been unlikely that this would ever be read.
You are not that lucky.
When I was in high school band, phantom was the coolest thing there was. We would throw out bits of it during football games - not that it was in the playbook. The section leaders would write out contraband music sheets and pass them through the stands.
For example, when the opposing team would flub what looked to have been a good play, the trombones, tubas and assorted lower brass would stand up and play the beginning of the overture with a really bad honking noise at the end of the second phrase. Here is a textual rendition of what that sounded like. Remember that I'm a drummer - not a musician:
DAUMMMMMMMM ............. DAUM Da Daum bump DAUMMMMM .... DAUM Da Daum bump - Honk!.
It was funnier than you might think. Then again, I was in band.
Santa Clara Vanguard, a quasi-professional marching band, played Phantom for at least 2 seasons. Their on field show was majestic; to this day it remains the arrangement I hear in my head when I think of the Music of the Night - forget Michael Crawford!
The shows included magic tricks designed by David Copperfield like mirrors on either end of the field that the phantom would jump through and appear 100 yards away. The most amazing thing I ever saw on a football field was the entire band disappearing under a large flag bearing the now famous mask and a red rose. Three melodic percussionists played the remaining bars of the music box theme from the sidelines as the drum major pulled the tarp away and walked off the field.
The official score and arrangements for phantom proved to be too expensive for us to use my senior year - we played West Side Story instead.. snap ... snap

W.H.S. rules on band field competition. Didn't they kick Hilcrest's butt many times? My favorite performance was done to Robin Hood in fall of 1992.

I will confess that I am a band groupie or wannabe. (how pathetic)I had an ex-boyfriend and a brother that played the trumpet in band and I always enjoyed watching them. I wish I had learned to play an instrument. Willard H.S. field competition was the pride of the school. I almost considered being a flag girl just to be in the band. My lack of coordination kept me from doing that though.

When you're a Jet,
You're a Jet all the way
From your first cigarette
To your last dyin' day.

When you're a Jet,
If the spit hits the fan,
You got brothers around,
You're a family man!

You're never alone,
You're never disconnected!
You're home with your own:
When company's expected,
You're well protected!

Then you are set
With a capital J,
Which you'll never forget
Till they cart you away.
When you're a Jet,
You stay a Jet!

Oh, when the Jets fall in at the cornball dance,
We'll be the sweetest dressin' gang in pants!
And when the chicks dig us in our Jet black ties,
They're gonna flip, gonna flop, gonna drop like flies!

When you're a Jet,
You're the top cat in town,
You're the gold medal kid
With the heavyweight crown!

When you're a Jet,
You're the swingin'est thing:
Little boy, you're a man;
Little man, you're a king!

The Jets are in gear,
Our cylinders are clickin'!
The Sharks'll steer clear
'Cause ev'ry Puerto Rican's a lousy chicken!

Here come the Jets
Like a bat out of hell.
Someone gets in our way,
Someone don't feel so well!

Here come the Jets:
Little world, step aside!
Better go underground,
Better run, better hide!

We're drawin' the line,
So keep your noses hidden!
We're hangin' a sign,
Says "Visitors forbidden"
And we ain't kiddin'!

Here come the Jets,
Yeah! And we're gonna beat
Ev'ry last buggin' gang
On the whole buggin' street!
On the whole!
Ever!
Mother!
Lovin'!
Street!
Yeah!
