Dream On

Back in the early 90's an HBO comedy called "Dream On" was a huge hit - ok, not quite as big as Sex in the City, but huge for HBO standards in the era before Must See TV. The actual plot itself was not all that original .... single/divorced guy living in new York with wacky friends, a dead end job trying to get ... ermmmm .... find love. What made the show special were the classic movie clips that would cut in to express what Martin was feeling or thinking. The classic example is when martin is ordered to the conference room at work for a meeting that was not going to go well .... and we suddenly see a black and white scene of roman soldiers, clutching a prisoner, shouting, "to the coliseum!"
In my own life, I mentally do this too. It comes in handy when a line from a romantic comedy turns out to be just the right thing to say ... "You had me at Hello" or .... "I'll have what she's having".

The Godfather is a huge provider of Dream On moments from "Go to the Mattresses" to "it's not personal - it's Business". Because these were quoted so much in You've got mail, some of these have crossover romantic comedy appeal.

Other iconic movies, like Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure provide good material .... whenever Napoleon is mentioned, "The Short-Dead Dude" .. or Lincoln's Gettysburg'esque speech at the end "Party on Dudes".

When looking for something to enjoy about at meeting with consultants - Office Space anyone? "Right?! ......."

Not surprisingly I have quite a few Star Wars moments. Who hasn't been tempted to respond with the Yoda speech when someone tells you that they will "try" something.

When walking into a dingy truck stop along the interstate, I often think, "you'll never find a more retched hive of scum and villainy" .... that's what Ben calls Mos Eisley in the beginning of episode in the Cantina scene.

Ok - one more .....

In The Empire Strikes Back - when Luke is fighting Vader for the first time in the carbonite factory at Cloud City - He jumps out of the freezing pit, slices an exhaust pipe and sprays Vader with smoke and steam ..... what does Vader say?

This is why if someone at our house lets out an especially good fart or belch, I'll use my best James Earl Jones voice to say, "Impressive".

I have always failed in my "guyhood" to be able to retain useless movie quotes to use at an appropriate time.

It is a skill that I do not have.
Impressive!

My quotes tend to be limited to specific movies and TV shows. I focus heavily on Office Space and Simpsons.

I'll quote a TV show right now. I know at least Dash will recognize it.

"Spam, spam, spam, spam, eggs, and spam."

I posted a comment yesterday but it isn't here. Did you delete it? I am almost positive it posted correctly. Sorry if I offended you.

"We're not in Kansas anymore" is nearly worn out for us at this point...

Golden,

yes you did post. I had a spam post that came in right after yours that I attempted to delete ... but I clicked the trash can at the top of the spam (yours) rather than the bottom .... I meant to email you and apologize .... I obviosuly didn't, so I'll do that here.

No ofence was taken - and I certainly didn't mean to offend you by deleting your comment.

sorry

That's what I thought happened. You can ask Golden. :)

Stupid spam.

Yeah, Dust told me that is what probably happened. It's ok that you accidentally deleted it. I was just worried that you might have been offended.

In college, we seemed to have classic rock lyrics for any given moment. My roommate and I could carry on entire conversations in front of people with these lyrics and no one noticed.

Oh my favorite is Ricardo Monteban playing KHAN from Star Trek "Wrath of Khan"... Khan say: "From hell's heart I stab at thee... For hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee." Pretty intense, but I don't quote it much to Roamer. BTW that quote was lifted from Melville's Moby Dick.

LOL

I remember that show!

And, I do the same thing. Movie dialogue is constantly spewing from my mouth. Nice to know I'm not alone. :D

Stuff you didn't mention that I quote all the time:
Monty Python (anything of their's really)
Clueless
Dirty Dancing
Lines from Friends
Seinfield
The Emporer's New Groove
Mulan
Plus a lot of obscure classic movies that people tend not to get. :P
