The whole purpose of places like Starbucks is for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee. Short, tall, light, dark, caf, decaf, low-fat, non-fat, etc. So people who don't know what the hell they're doing or who on earth they are can, for only $2.95, get not just a cup of coffee but an absolutely defining sense of self: Tall. Decaf. Cappuccino.
Sometimes I wonder about my life. I lead a small life. Well, not small, but circumscribed. And sometimes I wonder, do I do it because I like it, or because I haven't been brave? So much of what I see reminds me of something I read in a book, when shouldn't it be the other way around? I don't really want an answer. I just want to send this cosmic question out into the void. So good night, dear void.

It's so sad when one resorts to quoting a movie. BTW, Nora comments in the "extra features" that she likes to put "journalistic" features in her movies, because she wrote for newspapers/magazine prior in life. (She was going to get a real career since her parents just wrote silly romantic movies.) HA
I guess even when life takes a turn we often hold onto a part of the past. This is the specific quote she mentioned from the movie. Interesting that you picked it tonight dash.
With how busy you are, I am surprised that you feel that way. You make a difference in the lives of boys every week.
can you elaborate on Starbucks being a place for those with no-decision making capability?
Are you saying that starbucks tends to be an adventure out of the norm to those who don't like to make decisions, because of their extensive menu and all their options?
So what happens when you learn the system and the decision making stops?
All I know is that it is so easy to get into a routine. I think it does take a bit of courage to break the routine. The routine is easy and comfortable, warm and safe.
Forrest,
I believe that Dash is asserting that people who have a hard time defining their lives due to timidity in life can find some self-expression or definition in what they order from Starbucks.
I lack definition in a lot of my life, but I lack definition at Starbucks too. Their coffee really isn't that good (Don't let PD hear that!), but a small decaf is about the only thing I am interested in ordering there.
Oh mi ga .....
It's a movie quote .....
This is a follow-up to the Tom and Meg post on 'You've Got Mail'. The text of the post comes from two emails that Joe and Kathleen are exchanging at the begining of the movie.
I was unsure of what to write in my post and remembered Kathleen's small life quote and decided to go with it. Adding the Starbucks thing was just to round out the memory.
I thought my readers would catch the quote ... sorry for not citing it better.
I knew what you were trying to do and I TRIED to inform your readers. :)
Sorry, that we don't have that movie memorized! :) But it did seem oddly familiar...and dated too. I was thinking -2.95 for a drink a starbucks seems rather cheap these days.
It is cool though, taking a movie quote and discussing and disecting its meaning.
Give me more!
I like starbucks, the flavored drinks. I never get plain ol' coffee.
Yeah, it's obviously been years since I've seen You've Got Male ...er, Mail.
I read T first comment and thought "???????? She's not making sense again, maybe she meant to post that comment on the tom and meg triology post."
My bad.
So the whole thing was a quote?! I never saw Joe & the Volcano... If you see it cheap on DVD send it to me. ; )And I thought this was about coffee and personalities. I saw a waitress here almost laugh her head off when an american ordered cappucino BEFORE dinner. They served it still laughing. Coffee is for after eating not for running around all day. Personally I like having a beverage going all day.
